…We think we’re going to be great and we feel a little bit robbed when our expectations aren’t met… But sometimes our expectations sell us short… Sometimes the expected simply pales in comparison to the unexpected…
How many times have you felt robbed by your expectations? When that person that said they would always be there, wasn't? When you worked so hard to get your ducks in a row to get that job, then didn't?
I talk frequently with a friend about expectations and how much we dislike them. Personally, I try not to have too many because it gives me a chance to more objectively evaluate the situation.
For example, think about the last time you went out on a blind date or someone you had never seen? All the hype, the talk, and then you see them in real life. What were you thinking? How did the rest of the evening turn out if it wasn't what you "expected"?
Too, I like not having many expectations because I like the surprises of life. Many times the unexpected will give you something better in the long run. It allows you to make the best of any situation.
...You’ve got to wonder why we cling to our expectations... Because the expected is just what keeps us steady, standing, still… The expected is just the beginning… The unexpected is what changes our lives.
